5 Benefits of Smudging

Smudging is a practice that has been used by many indigenous cultures, such as the Native Americans, dating back to thousands of years. Recently, the smudging of herbs has been popularized by main stream media, and it deserves every ounce recognition as it is beneficial to the health of your mind and body. Here are a few ways smudging is beneficial, as well as how to smudge:

First thing's first: "What in the world is smudging and how can I do it?"

Smudging is a powerful cleansing technique, whether you are cleansing the spirit, your space, or your crystals. Basically, you burn a bundle of herbs (sage is great for beginners, get it here) or a stick of wood for approximately 30 seconds. Blow or wave the flame out. There should be a smoke that is produced from the burning. Permeate the smoke around yourself, your surroundings, or your crystals in order to seek the full purifying benefits. Be careful where you set the bundle once you are done; always have a flammable surface or bowl to place your smudge stick (we have the cutest lotus smudge dish that you can purchase here!)  

1. CLEANSING CRYSTALS

Not just for cleansing the spirit, smudging is also great for clearing any energy blockages in your crystals, as well! Just make sure that the smoke permeates the air surrounding your crystals; it is one of the quickest ways to purify your crystals, other than selenite. 

2. CLEARING NEGATIVE ENERGY

Negative energy is so easy to absorb, and it is living all around us. I find that burning sage, palo santo, or cedar are some of the most clarifying ways to eliminate the negative energy that has been weighing on you.  

3. AIR PURITY

It is true that white sage and palo santo have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, but they also can clarify funky smells when burnt. Cat's litter box bringing you down? Just burn a stick of palo santo, and show your cat's who's boss. 

4. SOOTHES STRESS

An amazing reliever of stress, the fragrant aroma that comes from smudging herbs can be soothing to the nerves. It is one of the reasons that smudging is often used during meditation and yoga. 

5. BOOSTS ENERGY LEVELS

Energy blockages are a huge reason that your energy levels are down--don't take this as a diagnosis, per say, as burning some herbs cannot cure anemia, or any other serious disorders. What we mean here by energy is mental energy; those moments when you feel like giving up, or a negative presence is weighing down on you. It is important to regularly cleanse these mental blockages with smudging, introspection and meditation.
